Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn set sail in an Edwardian trawler for a fishing trip, but as women were considered bad luck at sea, Ruth Goodman is left ashore to forage on the beach, prepare potted shrimp and build a smoke-house to cure mackerel. She also explores one of the growing fashions of the era by holding a seance, while once back on dry land, Alex and Peter drive their cattle along a dangerous route to find a new pasture.
