An unidentified body is found in the remains of a burned down caravan. Arson is suspected and the Beck group is engaged. Martin Beck's manager, Klas Fredén has recruited the Norwegian cop Steinar Hovland to the team. He quickly turns out to be the exact opposite to Gundvald which affects cooperation with Martin in both positive and negative ways.
