The long Edwardian summer: Sigmund Rosenblum is on a mission in the Russian Empire. After he gets information about oil exploration, his train is stopped and he is arrested, but he escapes and travels to London. There, he compromises Margaret Thomas, a clergyman's young wife. He feels compelled to avenge the murder of his friend Rose, killed in connection with the oil field information. Margaret's husband dies, leaving her as a rich young widow. Rosenblum marries her, changes his name to Sidney Reilly, and is posted with his new wife to Port Arthur in the Far East.
